Switchboard Upgrades

Switchboard upgrades that make your home safer and ready for what is next

If your switchboard still has ceramic fuses, no RCDs, or trips when you run a few appliances, it is due for an upgrade. A modern switchboard protects your family from electric shock and fire, satisfies insurers, and gives you the capacity for solar, a battery, a heat pump or an EV charger.

Why Vital Energy for this

Done by electricians, backed for ten years

Switchboard work is where cheap installs get found out. Our registered electricians replace and upgrade boards to current standards, label every circuit properly, and leave room for the upgrades you are planning next.

What is included

  • Inspection and report on your existing board
  • Supply and installation of a new switchboard with RCDs and MCBs
  • Circuit labelling and testing
  • Coordination with your network company where a mains upgrade is needed
  • Certificate of Compliance and Electrical Safety Certificate
01

RCD protection on every circuit

Residual current devices cut power in milliseconds when a fault is detected. Older boards often have none.

02

Insurance and compliance

Insurers increasingly ask about switchboard condition. A certified upgrade removes the question.

03

Capacity for the future

Solar, batteries, heat pumps and EV chargers all need board capacity. We plan it in now so you are not paying twice.

04

Smart panel options

Smart switchboards give you visibility over energy use by circuit, from your phone.

FAQs

Switchboard Upgrades: questions people ask

Straight answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

Signs include ceramic or rewireable fuses, no RCDs, frequent tripping, flickering lights, burning smells, or a board that cannot take new circuits for solar, a heat pump or an EV charger. If you see any of these, get it assessed.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential upgrades are completed in one day, with power off for part of it. Commercial boards vary and we plan around your operating hours.

Will I lose power during the upgrade?

Yes, for a few hours while the board is swapped. We schedule it to suit you and tell you exactly when.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in NZ?

It depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits, whether the mains and earthing need work, and whether we are adding capacity for solar, a battery or an EV charger. Send us a photo of your current board and we will give you a fixed price, no site visit needed for most homes.

Can you upgrade my board when you install solar or an EV charger?

Yes, and it is often the most cost-effective time to do it. We assess board capacity as part of every solar, battery and EV charger quote.
