Solar Battery Storage

Home battery storage that keeps the lights on and the evening bills down

A solar battery stores the power your panels make during the day so you can use it at night, when grid prices are highest, and keep essentials running during an outage. We install three systems: Enphase IQ Battery 5P (15-year warranty), FranklinWH aPower (13.6kWh, generator-ready) and Sigenergy SigenStor (modular, 8kWh to 48kWh+).

Why Vital Energy for this

Done by electricians, backed for ten years

Without a battery most homes export cheap daytime solar and buy expensive power back at night. The right battery depends on whether you are building new, adding to an existing system, need serious backup, or are planning for EV charging and full electrification. We will tell you straight which one fits.

What is included

  • Assessment of your usage pattern, backup needs and existing solar
  • Battery and gateway supply and installation
  • Backup circuit configuration (essential circuits or whole home)
  • Generator integration where required
  • Monitoring app set-up and handover
01

Backup when the grid drops

Standard solar shuts down in an outage. With a battery we configure whole-home or partial backup, and can integrate a generator for full resilience. A real advantage in Piha, Muriwai, Titirangi and other outage-prone areas.

02

Use your own power at night

Store daytime surplus and run the evening peak from the battery instead of the grid. Better self-consumption, lower bills, more control.

03

Ready for EVs and electrification

Sigenergy combines hybrid inverter, battery, EV charging and AI energy management on one platform, and grows in 8kWh blocks as your needs change.

04

Matched to your inverter

Enphase IQ 5P pairs with Enphase microinverter systems. FranklinWH suits homes wanting big backup capacity. Sigenergy suits larger households, farms and commercial sites.

FAQs

Solar Battery Storage: questions people ask

Straight answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Do I need a battery with solar?

Not necessarily. Panels alone cut your daytime use. A battery lets you store excess for evenings and outages, increases independence from the grid, and provides backup power during blackouts.

Which battery do you recommend?

It depends on your goals. Enphase IQ Battery 5P (15-year warranty) pairs with Enphase microinverter systems. FranklinWH aPower (13.6kWh, generator-ready) suits homes that want strong backup. Sigenergy SigenStor suits larger homes, farms and commercial sites that want an expandable all-in-one platform.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes. We regularly retrofit batteries to existing systems, including systems we did not install. We will check compatibility with your inverter and switchboard first.

Will my home run during a power cut?

Yes, with the right setup. Batteries like FranklinWH aPower or Enphase IQ Battery can be configured for whole-home or partial backup, and Sigenergy's gateway switches to backup in under 10 milliseconds. We can also integrate a generator.

What are the Sigenergy warranties?

The SigenStor hybrid inverter, modular battery and gateway each carry a 10-year warranty. Enphase offers longer inverter warranties (25 years); Sigenergy's strength is scalability and its all-in-one design.

How much does a solar battery cost in NZ?

It depends on capacity (5kWh to 48kWh+), the brand, and how much of the house you want backed up. Enphase IQ 5P suits homes adding modest storage to an Enphase system, FranklinWH gives 13.6kWh of backup in one unit, and Sigenergy scales in 8kWh blocks. We quote the battery with the rest of your system so you see the payback on the whole thing, not a headline unit price.

How long will a 10kWh battery run my house?

It depends what is on. A typical evening load of lights, fridge, TV and cooking draws around 1 to 2kW, so 10kWh covers roughly 5 to 10 hours. Limit backup to essential circuits and it stretches much further; add a generator and it runs indefinitely. We model this from your usage when we size the system.

Where should a home battery be installed?

A garage wall or a shaded exterior wall with clearance and ventilation, close to the switchboard to keep cabling short. FranklinWH aPower and Enphase IQ batteries are rated for outdoor installation. We confirm the spot on the site visit against the manufacturer's clearances and NZ standards.

Can you do off-grid solar systems?

Yes. With battery storage and generator integration we configure systems for full off-grid resilience, or for grid-connected homes that want to ride through long outages. Rural and coastal properties around Auckland are where we do most of this work.

Do you install Tesla Powerwall?

Our battery range is Enphase, FranklinWH and Sigenergy, chosen for warranty, backup performance and local support. If you are comparing against Tesla Powerwall 3, ask us and we will give you an honest like-for-like comparison on capacity, backup and warranty.
