At Vital Solar, we believe choosing the right solar partner and premium equipment is the process that sets you up for decades of safe, reliable energy. Below is our version of “how to shop for your solar system”, tuned for New Zealand conditions, and emphasising safety, quality and long-term service.
1. Choose the Right Installer: Your Energy Partner for Life
While product specs matter, what actually makes the biggest difference is who installs and supports your system for the long term.
-
Give $1 installer is a qualified electrician and certified installer in New Zealand (for example, holds an electrical SERVICES provider licence).
-
Ask about their track record: how many systems have they installed? Do they handle service, repairs and monitoring long-term?
-
At Vital Solar, we commit to being your “Energy Partner for Life”, not just install and walk away.
-
Make sure the installer assesses your actual energy use, household patterns, roof conditions, shading, etc, rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all system.
2. Select the Inverter or Microinverter Platform (The Heart of Your System)
Inverter technology is critical: it converts the DC output of panels into usable AC power for your home, and it’s the platform for monitoring, battery integration and safety features.
-
We specialise in Enphase microinverters, they offer advanced safety (e.g., integrated rapid shutdown), leading shading tolerance, module‐level monitoring, and are designed for future battery/EV-charging integration.
-
In NZ, with our sun patterns, shading issues (neighbouring trees, roof orientation), and rising electricity prices, a microinverter system truly pays dividends.
-
Don’t just focus on panel brand, the inverter/monitoring platform often has greater lifetime impact on performance and serviceability.
3. Consider Battery Storage & Setting up for later
While solar panels generate your own power, battery storage allows you to store excess generation, reduce grid import and add resilience (especially valuable if you care about safety, blackout readiness, EV charging).
-
At Vital Solar, we can integrate the Enphase IQ Battery or similar well-made solutions.
-
Ask: what warranty covers the battery (15 yrs or more is ideal), what capacity, how easy is it to expand later, and how is monitoring handled.
-
Note: In NZ, the payback period for batteries depends on your tariff, export rate, and how much you use after dark. But for clients who prioritise safety and long-term self-sufficiency, batteries are becoming more mainstream.
4. Premium Solar Panels, But Perspective Matters
Panels are essential, but in many cases, they’re a less critical decision point than installer, inverter, or design.
-
At Vital Solar, we use high-efficiency premium panels (such as SunPower) because we match our client base, who want premium, long-lasting solutions.
-
However, don’t over-pay purely for “marketing hype” on panels. A well-designed system from a premium brand & installer on a good roof will outperform a cheap system.
-
Give $1 panels have manufacturing and performance warranties (25 yrs+), are sourced ethically (as you already emphasise), and are compatible with your inverter/monitoring ecosystem.
5. Mounting & Roof System, Don’t Cut Corners
The mounting system is the unseen foundation. In NZ’s coastal conditions, strong winds, salt air (especially in places like Auckland, West Auckland, Coromandel), you need corrosion-resistant, durable racking.
-
At Vital Solar, we use Schletter racking: aluminium, marine-grade options, tested for NZ wind and coastal spray conditions.
-
Make sure the installer’s roof penetrations are well sealed, flashing done properly, Warrant of Fitness on the roof structure if older.
-
Insist on a workmanship warranty for the installation, and give $1 racking’s warranty is aligned with the panels (so you’re not left with a 25-year panel but a 10-year mount).
6. Ask the Right Questions Before You Sign
Here are some questions you should ask your installer (and us at Vital, we’ll be proactively answering them):
-
Is my system designed around my energy usage, roof shape, shading, and setting up for later (EV, battery)?
-
Which inverter/microinverter platform are you using, and what monitoring app is provided?
-
What warranty lengths apply (panel, inverter/microinverter, mounting, workmanship)?
-
What happens if part of the system fails, is there local service, spare parts, responsiveness?
-
What export rate am I realistically going to get in NZ? What’s the payback period given my consumption pattern?
-
Is the installer committed long-term? What service support do they offer in 5, 10, and 15 years?
-
What is the average degradation of panels after 10-15 years?
-
How will the system integrate with a future EV charger or battery?
7. Summary: Make the Right Investment for the Long Term
Solar is not just about “getting some panels on the roof”. For clients who value electrical safety, excellent workmanship, premium equipment, and setting up for later (EV, battery, self-sufficiency), the right decisions now matter hugely.
At Vital Solar & Electrical, our promise is: we work with the best equipment (Enphase microinverters + SunPower panels + Schletter racking + EVNEX chargers) and provide a service relationship for the lifetime of your system.
We’re not competing on lowest price alone, we’re competing on value, safety, longevity and being your partner for life.
